5 Common Summer Skin Problems and Treatments

Summer skincare trends

Summer is in full swing, which means spending more time outside, more days spent lounging by the pool, and all those trips to the beach. But, while it’s hard not to love long summer days, this season can take a toll on your skin if you’re not careful.

You can keep your complexion glowing as bright as the sun with the right skincare ritual. Here’s everything you need to know about summer skin problems.

#1 - Acne Breakouts

If you usually experience breakouts during the summer, you’re far from alone. Acne breakouts happen when your pores get clogged with oil and bacteria. In addition, when it’s hot outside, you sweat more, and sweaty skin is more likely to collect oil and bacteria throughout the day.

How to treat them: If you’re prone to breakouts, take extra precautions to avoid excessive sweating. If avoiding physical activity when the weather is fine isn’t a sacrifice you’re willing to make, you should treat your skin to a little extra post-sweat love.

If you’re hot and sweaty, pat down your skin instead of rubbing sweat off with your hands. When you come inside, immediately wash your face with a hydrating cleanser to remove any buildup.

#2 - Sunburns

Sunburn is probably the most common summer skincare problem. Anyone can get a sunburn from spending too much time absorbing UV rays (even through a window!). Over time, these rays damage our skin, opening the door to skin cancer.

How to treat them: Always wear sunscreen, even if it’s cloudy outside. Sunscreen reduces your chances of being burnt and protects your skin from harmful UV rays. If you’ve already been sunburnt, try applying aloe vera gel to soothe irritation and speed up healing.

#3 - Eczema Flare-Ups

Eczema is a chronic skin condition that causes red, itchy, and cracked patches of skin. Most people experience flare-ups during the summer since hot temperatures irritate the skin. You’re likely to notice eczema develop in areas where sweat typically collects, like the creases of your elbows and back of your knees.

How to treat them: Stay hydrated to maintain a moderate body temperature. To avoid excessive sweat, rinse your skin with clean water, and change into fresh clothing regularly. As a one-two punch against eczema, you can also ramp up your summer skincare ritual with hydrating products, like collagen face masks and moisturizers.

#4 - Bug Bites

Spending more time outside means increased exposure to bugs. From mosquito bites to bee stings, bug bites can wreak havoc on your skin, especially if you have an allergic reaction.

How to treat them: Whenever possible, wear bug repellant and protective clothing to reduce your risk of insect bites. If you notice a bite, don’t scratch it. Scratching can irritate your skin, slowing the healing process.

#5 - Dry Skin

Summer can bring high humidity, but it’s not always enough to fight dry skin. Spending time in air conditioning can dry out your skin, and spending time outdoors in the warm sun can do the same.

How to treat it: Give your skin some extra TLC with collagen under eye masks, hydrating serums, and moisturizers. Add a daily moisturizer with SPF to your skincare routine to boost hydration and protect your skin.
