What Should I Do Before and After a Face Mask?

What Should I Do Before and After a Face Mask?

When you leave the spa, your skin is glowing, radiant, and hydrated. But recreating that magic at home can be fruitless if you’re not layering your skincare products in the correct order. Here’s how to master your face mask routine so you can treat yourself to a luxurious spa day at home.

Wash Your Face

For the best at-home spa experience, make sure you properly prep your skin by removing any makeup and washing your face. If you’re wearing makeup, double cleanse by removing your makeup with micellar water. Then, follow up with your favorite face wash.

Exfoliate

After cleansing, follow up with an exfoliant to free your skin of any dead cells, helping it to better absorb the nutrients and active ingredients in your mask. You might choose a physical exfoliant, like a facial scrub, depending on your skin type. For a gentler option, opt for a chemical exfoliant.

If you’re not sure what to reach for, BHAs unclog pores and remove sebum while AHAs peel away the surface of the skin. Both will leave your skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, but BHAs are more suitable for oily or combination skin and AHAs might be too harsh for extremely dry or sensitive skin.

Apply Toner

Next, it’s time to apply toner. Because it helps to balance your skin’s natural pH, toner should be a key component of your morning and evening skincare routine anyway!

When used for your self-care spa session, it can also help to soothe irritated skin and get rid of extra oil. Essentially, you can think of toner as a face mask priming mist that can help you maximize the benefits of your face mask.

Apply Your Face Mask

Before you sit back and let your face mask work its magic, take some time to read the instructions—they’re there for a reason! Believe it or not, leaving your mask on for longer than the recommended time can take a toll on your skin. For example, clay masks dry up over time, which can draw moisture out. So, follow instructions accordingly.

Tone Again

Spritzing your skin after removing your face mask can help normalize the pH level again and close your pores, thanks to its astringent properties. You can massage in the toner with your fingertips—or, for an even more luxurious experience, use a gemstone roller for additional penetration and a refreshing mini-massage before moving on to your moisturizer.

Moisturize

After your skin soaks up all the serum in your face mask, it might seem redundant to follow up with a moisturizer. However, moisturizer helps penetrate the skin, delivering active ingredients where they’re needed most. It also creates a physical barrier on the skin to prevent water loss and seal in those active ingredients. That means you’ll see better results and maintain the radiant glow achieved from your face mask.
