How Can I Take Care of My Skin in Spring As the Weather Changes?

Tips for spring skincare include using lighter creams and lotions to make up for warmer temps and more moisture in the air, using makeup with high SPF to protect against UV rays, and hydrating and exfoliating frequently to counteract the effects of increased perspiration.

As the days grow longer, the humidity ticks up, and the temperature soars, your skin will have to adjust to these changes. In spring, the heavier skin products you use in the winter may start to feel weighty and greasy. While they’re good to support the dry conditions of winter, thicker skincare products are more likely to get trapped under the skin as the mercury rises, causing breakouts.

If you want to head into spring with your skin glowing as bright as the sun, check out the following tips.

Choose Lighter Products

In winter, it’s all about lathering on thick creams and lotions in order to keep your skin from cracking and drying out due to the intense cold and lack of moisture in the air. Now that spring has begun to kick chilly days and ice and snow to the curb, it’s time to lighten up on those products.

As spring contributes to blooming flowers and longer days, it also brings about an increase in humidity—meaning that your skin doesn’t require certain products that soften and condition your skin. Instead, you can make use of lightweight moisturizers that give your skin the nourishment it needs without oversaturating it and clogging up your pores.

Raise Your SPF Dosage

Even though you’re supposed to wear sunscreen during the winter, many people don’t. They (wrongly) assume that there isn’t enough sun during the colder months to warrant wearing sunscreen. However, now that spring is here and the sun is out for much longer during the day, you can’t afford not to adequately protect your skin from harsh UV rays.

Use an SPF of at least 50 to help ward off sun damage and associated risks, such as skin cancer. Using makeup products that provide some SPF protection is also a great idea.

Hydrate and Buff Your Skin

Your skin is going to need a lot more hydration as the days get warmer and you begin to sweat more. As your body’s largest organ, the skin needs to be hydrated frequently to remain healthy. To support skin and whole-body health, be sure to drink plenty of water.

Coming out of the dark, cold months of winter, you may also notice more layers of dead skin all over your body. Just as you shed the heavy coat and winter clothes, you can also slough off these dead skin cells.

Exfoliate your skin by laying in a hot bath while giving yourself a good but gentle scrub. Use an exfoliating product and a loofah or natural sea sponge. The latter will even provide some antibacterial benefits!

Be sure to focus on areas like the feet, the knees, and the elbows. Don’t use the same amount of pressure on your face that you would use on your body. Your facial skin is much more delicate and requires milder products and more gentle exfoliation.
