What is the Décolleté?

What is the Décolleté?

We can all agree that our facial skin deserves extra TLC. Most of us take care to treat it daily with exfoliants, moisturizers, face masks, and daily sunscreen. But have you taken that skincare routine past your chin and jawline, down to your neck and chest area?

Our décolletage is a French word referring to the skin along the chest, neck, shoulders, and back. It is just as sensitive to environmental damage as the skin on our face. It is often the first place that signs of aging appear as many women neglect to care for it with the same passion that they do above their jawline.

Why your décolleté needs extra attention

With women’s fashion favoring décolleté cuts, the décolleté is often equally as exposed as our face. And the skin in this area is susceptible to sun damage and other harmful elements that can create sunspots, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and more. This makes it extremely important to nourish our neck and décolleté with the same degree of care as we do our undereye, brows, cheeks, and forehead.

How to care for your décolleté

Much like your face, a simple, effective skin care routine is important in maintaining the skin of the decollete.

  1. Cleanse – Daily washing of the neck and chest is extremely important in removing dirt, grime, and pollutants that can build up in the pores throughout the day. Ideally, you should use a gentle cleanser in the morning for a quick refresh and a more diligent routine at night to detoxify your skin.
  2. Moisturize – Moisturizing daily helps to maintain optimal oil levels, keeping your skin supple and firm. If the skin here becomes too dry, it can become more prone to wrinkles. Without a good moisturizer, the skin may also compensate by producing its own oil, which can lead to breakouts.
  3. Protect – Hopefully, you already include a broad-spectrum UVA- and UVB-fighting sun cream in your daily skincare routine. Now, slather that protective layer down a bit lower to cover your neck and décolleté as well. Rainy days count, too!
  4. Replenish – It is good to add a little extra love to our normal skincare routine and bathe our skin in additional nutrients. Most of us do this through face masks, a relaxing, nutrient-packed way to soak in everything our skin may be missing from our sometimes busy and chaotic lives. Look for neck and décolletage masks designed to fit this area of the body and give it a replenishing boost of collagen, vitamins, and other nutrients.
