Gua Sha vs. Jade Roller

Gua Sha vs. Jade Roller

Yes, we’ve officially entered debate season, and skincare hasn’t escaped its throes. Topping the list are two different facial tools that both have the same intent of toning the skin by improving blood flow: jade rollers and gua sha tools.  Depending on who you talk to, one tool might be preferred to the other.  So, the question: what are the actual differences these two tools, and how do you choose which one is right for you? Read on to get on the right path to skin perfection.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese technique that uses slow facial massage strokes to relieve tissue tension and boost circulation. The tool itself is sculpted with dips, curves, and edges that mimic the natural curvature and bone structure of the face. In gua sha, the stone is held in your hand and placed directly against your skin.  With light pressure, it is used to massage the skin and underlying tissue using light scraping and stretching strokes to release deep tension and pain centers.

The key benefits of gua sha are:

  • Releasing tension
  • Promoting lymphatic drainage
  • Increasing circulation
  • Detoxifying and depuffing
  • Smoothing wrinkles
  • Stimulating collagen production
  • Releasing stress and calming the nervous system
  • Encouraging tissue mobility and skin elasticity

In addition to facial benefits, gua sha is prized for its ability to relieve neck and back tension since its curvatures and hand held pressure allow the tool to be maneuvered into pockets of tension. One downside of gua sha is that it takes a lot of practice, effort, and time to nail the technique. It is best to learn the method from an expert so you can perform it properly to reap the maximum benefits of the treatment.

Jade Beauty Rollers

Jade beauty rollers are similar to gua sha in that they use gentle pressure to create movement beneath the surface of the skin to tone, define and soothe the skin while inducing lymphatic drainage and imparting a healthy glow.  One of the key benefits of jade rollers is that they are easy to use and don’t require angle manipulation the way that gua sha tools do.  Also, because of the smooth rolling motion, using a jade roller is thought to be the more soothing and relaxing treatment of the two.

Because one of the primary benefits of rolling is lymphatic drainage, it is best to start with using the roller on your neck before moving to your face. You can use small strokes to target specific areas, such as between the eyebrows or under the eyes, or long strokes to relax larger muscle groups like the jaw, cheeks, and forehead, for immediate skin benefits.

Some of the key benefits of using a jade roller are:

  • Detoxification
  • Improved lymphatic drainage
  • Increased blood flow
  • Brightened complexion
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Decreased puffiness
  • Contoured definition
  • Enhanced product absorption

An added bonus to using a jade roller is you get to reap the benefits associated with the power gemstone.  Known for centuries as the gemstone of harmony and balance, jade is associated with your Third Eye Chakra, the center of your intuition. Try using one of our jade gemstone rollers and repeating the manta, “I honor my intuition” during your treatment for an extra boost of inner and outer soul and skin refreshment as you channel the energy of jade.

Gua Sha or Jade Roller?

While we love both, we have to admit when you’re looking for results, relaxation, and holistic benefits, we’re bigger fans of jade rollers.  Have an opinion? Let us know in our #KNESKOMMUNITY
