How Often Should You Gua Sha?

How Often Should You Gua Sha?

To enjoy the best results, Gua Sha once per day. However, you can still experience the benefits of this ancient East Asian healing technique if you do it two to three times every week.

Essentially scraping the skin to ease tension and increase circulation, Gua Sha has long been used to treat the entire body. Recently, the technique has become popular as an effective at-home facial treatment that can do it all: brighten, tighten, smooth, and detoxify. In terms of skin support, there really isn’t a tool more powerful.

What is Gua Sha?

Literally translated, Gua means “press or stroke,” and Sha means “redness or rash.” It involves running a rounded, flat tool over the skin to help increase the flow of chi or shen in the body—AKA the internal, spiritual energy that gives our faces a vibrant glow.

Gua Sha is generally performed with jade or rose quartz tools, as these precious gemstones offer additional spiritual awakening and cleansing properties. For instance, it’s believed that rose quartz contains natural properties that well help promote skin cell renewal—simply by being in close proximity to your skin. Talk about an easy skin care routine!

What Are the Benefits of using a Gua Sha every day?

There are many benefits to using this ancient technique on the face, including:

  • Increased Circulation – Studies show that Gua Sha can boost circulation by up to 400% to help clear toxins from the blood and increase the flow of nutrients and oxygen throughout the skin.
  • Released Tension – Gua Sha has been shown to relax the facial muscles in order to ease tension and leave skin looking more supple and bright.
  • Stimulated Collagen Production – The act of Gua Sha creates a short-term red flush, called “controlled trauma,” in the skin. This redness jump-starts the skin’s repair cycles, increasing collagen production and smoothing wrinkles.

Gua Sha also helps to:

  • Relax the muscles
  • Increase lymphatic drainage
  • Depuff and detoxify
  • Encourage skin elasticity and mobility

How Do You Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is an art form that’s been perfected over thousands of years. But don’t worry, even if it’s a new concept to you, doing it properly is easier than you think.

To begin, prep your skin with a lubricant to prevent irritation. Water is best—some experts recommend doing it in the shower—but you can also use a facial mist, oil or even leftover serum from a mask.

Always start at your neck or jawline and finish at your forehead. Going in this motion will prevent the fluids from getting trapped in your face. Using gentle, upward and outward strokes, run the Gua Sha tool over the neck, jawline, chin, and mouth. Next, using short strokes in the same direction (never back and forth), sweep the tool across the cheeks, under the eyes, and over the eyebrows. Finish with upward strokes from your eyebrows to your hairline.

If you want to relax your muscles, press firmly. But if you want to ease puffiness, use lighter strokes. Don’t worry if your skin looks red or flushed afterward—that means you have successfully increased circulation.

After you’re done, take a look in the mirror. You should see smoother and more contoured skin, especially when performing Gua Sha daily. Congratulations, now you have another holistic healing practice to incorporate into your skin care ritual!
