Skin Care Tips for Sensitive Skin Sufferers

Skin Care Tips for Sensitive Skin Sufferers

Sensitive skin is as common as it is  non-specific. The term “sensitive skin” is merely a catch-all phrase to describe a range of conditions that cause persistent skin reactions. For some it means a genetic condition such as rosacea. For others, it’s an allergic reaction to something that comes in contact with their skin. Whether your sensitive skin causes redness, burning, itching, or dryness, it is very important that you develop a skin care routine that doesn’t aggravate any underlying causes, and that can help heal the reaction.

In other words, all skin requires love and care. Sensitive skin just needs a more specific type of TLC.  Here are some skin care tips for those with sensitivities.

Use the Right Products

Sensitive skin is best cared for with fragrance-free and non-comedogenic products. Non-comedogenic means that the product will not clog pores. Check packaging and labels to avoid ingredients including:

  • Parabens and other harsh preservatives
  • Fragrances
  • Glycolic acid, retinoids and other anti-aging chemicals
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate

The best products for sensitive skin are minimalist and natural. Look for gentle, allergy-tested products made from natural ingredients chosen for their protective, soothing and strengthening properties.

Soothe and Protect

Sensitive skin is often prone to environmental irritation and inflammation. Antioxidants go a long way towards protecting skin from these toxins as well as damaging free radicals. A soothing face mask for irritated skin with antioxidant-rich ingredients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, White Tea Extract, Licorice Root Extract, and Grape Seed Extract can help reverse some of the damage caused by exposure to the elements.

Cleanse

Regularly cleanse sensitive skin to remove inflammatory irritants. Start your cleansing routine by removing makeup and other products with a gentle remover such as natural oil or micellar water. Follow up by washing your entire face with a soap-free cleanser or cleansing oil and rinsing with warm- not hot – water.

Moisturize

It’s  just as important for those with sensitive skin to restore moisture after cleansing. Look for moisturizers that will not only hydrate your skin but will also protect it from harsh environmental factors. Serums and hydrating tonics made from organic ingredients are generally well tolerated and are a great alternative to traditional moisturizing lotions and creams. However, it is up to you to  review all ingredients and look out for suspicious triggers.

Sensitive Skin Care is Highly Personal

Unfortunately, sensitive skin is often unpredictable. What works one day, might react differently down the line. Sometimes even the best sensitive skin care routines fail, leaving skin red, irritated and inflamed. When this happens, the best course of action is to gently soothe and reset your skin. If you don’t have enough time to apply your antioxidant face mask, hold a cool washcloth to your face to reduce excess blood flow and calm the reaction. And always remember that finding the best skin care for sensitive skin takes patience. Ultimately, you will find the right balance that works for you.
