Save Your Skin with These Sunscreen Do's and Don'ts

What does a hyaluronic acid do for your face

Your skin is miraculous. It has a remarkable ability to renew and rejuvenate itself through cell turnover. As skin cells become damaged and die, they are sloughed off and replaced with fresh, new ones.

However, when exposed to the sun's harsh light, your skin can't function as well. Too much sun exposure raises your risk of skin cancer, premature wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation—skin issues that make you look older. A collagen facial mask can work wonders to make you look younger, but it's still important to carefully follow these sunscreen do's and don'ts.

Do choose an effective sunscreen

The first rule in choosing sunscreen is to avoid alternative products. Although sunscreen alternatives like coconut oil might sound holistic, they don't offer much protection. You need to choose real sunscreen.

Further, the SPF built into many foundations doesn't offer enough protection. Instead, look for a product with broad spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays. The standard rule is that an SPF of 30 is the minimum. However, many dermatologists recommend choosing at least 50 for maximum protection.

If you have sensitive skin, rosacea, eczema, or a similar issue, your skin will prefer mineral-based sunscreen products. They have ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. If you're planning on exercising outdoors or hitting the beach, look for a sports sunscreen that resists moisture.

Don't skimp on the sunscreen layer

People often don't apply enough sunscreen. Imagine that you have very dry skin, and the sunscreen is lotion. In other words, liberally apply it! Remember to cover all areas of exposed skin, including your neck (front and back), ears, feet (if you'll be wearing sandals), and hands. Also, be sure to use lip balm with SPF.

Do apply sunscreen year-round

Many people think that you only need to apply sunscreen during the summer months. Yes, the sun's UVB rays are at their strongest when the hemisphere is tilted toward the sun. Yet, both types of rays are emitted year-round. That's why applying sunscreen daily, regardless of the season, is essential.

Don't neglect sunscreen on cloudy days or when indoors

When it's cloudy outdoors, you might assume you don't need sunscreen. However, UVA and UVB rays pass through clouds, so you still need it regardless of the weather. Further, you are not necessarily protected because you're indoors.

Sunlight penetrates window glass quite easily, too. So, wherever you go, be sure to apply sunscreen before you head there.

Do reapply regularly

Check the label on your sunscreen. It tells you when you need to reapply. And if you're outdoors exercising or swimming, you should expect to need to reapply it more often.
